2008 South African Weekend At Trecanna

On 1st/2nd/3rd August 2008 we held our annual South African Weekend - despite a rainy month, the weekend was mainly sunny and dry and the nursery was packed with hundreds of South African plants in flower in our borders, plus a host of other blooms.

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HELPED AND ATTENDED - WE RAISED £1,400 FOR CHARITY OVER THE WEEKEND - THIS IS TO BE SPLIT BETWEEN ‘PERENNIAL’ AND ‘SENTEBALE’.

‘Perennial’ (The Gardeners Royal Benevolent Society) – this is the national charity founded in the 19th century, to support those who work or have worked in horticulture and their spouses/partners when they face adversity or need. www.perennial.org.uk

‘Sentebale’ was founded by Prince Seeiso from the Lesotho Royal family and Prince Harry in response to the plight of the neediest of Lesotho's people - its orphans and vulnerable children. It’s mission is to transform the lives of Lesotho's orphans and vulnerable children - the forgotten victims of poverty and of the HIV/Aids epidemic ravaging their country. Many of the plants at our nursery come from this region and we have formed a particular link with the Aids orphanage in Semonkong, raising money for the children who reside there. www.sentebale.org

Events over the weekend included:

Display borders with the species and hybrids clearly marked.

Tours of the nursery and plenty of good advice on offer. Expert and former national collection holder for Crocosmia, David Fenwick was present over the weekend.

Information boards and cultivation guides.

A slide show showing our photographs of many of the wild species of these plants growing in their wild habitats – quite an eye-opener for many gardeners.

A taste of traditional South African music.

All of this was supplemented by generous helpings of cream teas and cakes, plus South African rooibos tea.

NEXT YEARS EVENT WILL TAKE PLACE ON 7th/8th/9th August 2009.

The weekend is ideal for trips by gardening clubs - larger groups should book ahead. The local roads are accessible for up to 20 seat-minibuses & coaches.
