This form of Eucomis vandermerwei is a lovely rock garden or container subject. The leaves are long, slender and well-spotted (noticibly longer than normal 'vandermerwei') although I sometimes feel that this is more likely to be a reaction to conditions rather than a new form. Why not grow vandermerwei and 'Octopusoides' alongside each other & let me know what you think! both are superb Eucomis.
Small - 2 year old bulbs in 7cm pots
Eucomis are of South African origin.
Eucomis originate in Southern Africa and are commonly known as 'Pineapple Lilies' due to the obvious resemblance of the flower head and its crown of leafy bracts. The display lasts from summer to late autumn which is exceptional for a bulb. They make excellent container plants and are lovely in the border. Water and feed well whilst in growth, but keep the soil dry in winter. Eucomis are surprisingly hardy provided they have a winter mulch and good drainage.
